For AdministratorsMove Accounts to Another SchoolOccasionally, students and teachers move to a different school within the district during the school year. If you are a District Administrator (someone administrating at more than one school), then you can now use the Accounts page to move a student or teacher account to another school within your district. There are now two ways to do this: - Moving one account
- Moving multiple accounts
To move one account using the Accounts page: - Click the Edit icon for the account you wish to move. The Edit Account page for the selected account displays.
- Select the destination school from the Move user to drop-down menu. School Island immediately removes the account from the current school's account list and moves it to the specified school's account list.
To move multiple accounts using the Accounts page: - Notice each account listed on the Accounts page includes a checkbox. This check box allows you to select one or more accounts.
- Check the checkbox beside each account you wish to move.
- Select the destination school from the Move user to drop-down menu located at the bottom of the Accounts page.
- Click the Move link beside the Move user to drop-down menu. School Island immediately removes the selected accounts from the current school's account list and moves them to the specified school's account list.
| | Collaboration"Community partnerships offer one solution to building the school's capacity to help improving the lives of their children and families. Schools are where the children are. Collaborating with outside school resources and families is targeted at enhancing both academic and non-academic skills for children." - Education Week magazine In the past, teachers worked alone with little or no collaboration among them. This isolated work style is now on the decline, with more educators sharing ideas, developing and implementing plans together, as well as evaluating outcomes with their colleagues. Bruner (1991) defines collaboration as "a process to reach goals that cannot be achieved acting singly (or, at a minimum, cannot be reached efficiently). As a process, collaboration is a means to an end, not an end in itself." Collaboration is a work style more professionals are using to accomplish a shared goal. Why collaboration? The majority of public educational settings are now providing inclusive education for students with and without disabilities. Teachers, along with related educational professionals, support all students not only in achieving academic skills, but also in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become caring and compassionate citizens. One of the most critical skills required when providing inclusive education is collaboration. Through collaboration, ideas are shared, new and better strategies are developed, and problems are solved. What's more, student progress along with their associated outcome are monitored and evaluated more effectively. True collaboration not only enhances inclusive education, but is beneficial for all individuals involved in the child’s education, including parents. Characteristics of CollaborationFriend and Cook (1996) outline six key attributes to collaboration. Collaboration is voluntary. You decide to participate. Collaboration is based on parity. Teachers who collaborate must believe all contributions are valued equally. Collaboration requires a shared goal. Teachers collaborate only when a goal is shared. Collaboration includes shared responsibility for key decisions. Teachers divide work and share decision-making about the activities they are undertaking. Collaboration includes shared accountability for outcomes. If teachers share key decisions, then they must also share accountability for the results. Collaboration is based on shared resources. Each teacher in a collaborative effort makes a concerted effort in contributing a resource.

Collaboration: A Must for Teachers in Inclusive Educational Settings (http://education.shu.edu/pt3grant/lee/collaboration.html) | Statistics & Surveys | SurveysSurveys show that professional development activities among Northwest teachers regularly involve collaboration with peers. Moreover, four-fifths of Northwest teachers say they make a conscious effort to coordinate the content of their instruction with their colleagues. Despite those statistics, teachers and administrators across the region agree that more collaboration is needed in their schools (http://www.nwrel.org/nwedu/11-01/region/). | Quick Links | Collaboration LinksWant more information supporting collaboration? It is with great sadness that we learned of her passing. Always the professional and simply a nice person, Maureen could be counted on to share ideas and in so doing, it was evident she really cared about helping her colleagues and the students. Maureen has been a part of our lives for almost nine years. Her voice on the phone, visits to her school, and seeing her at meetings each year, will be missed. | | As a member of the School Island family, this is your newsletter.
