Educators Working with School Island

Dr. Lawrence Volk is a math and science teacher at John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC as well as a popular speaker at Math and Science conferences. Larry is also a great advocate of School Island having served as a consultant during the development of the successful School Island course in Physical Science. His Teacher's Bag of Tricks website (www.teachersbagoftricks.com) contains plenty of practical advice for teachers. In a recent posting, "Working with Companies", Larry shared this insight with his readers. While conference attendees often see him chatting with other teachers in a conference booth, he isn't working for any particular company. Rather, he lends his support to the many products that help kids learn and make the classroom a better place. The following article is an excerpt from "Working with Companies" and is reprinted here with his permission.

"... I hope all teachers and companies that work together to improve learning would e-mail me at bagoftricks@msn.com with other ways teachers and companies can work together. A teacher working with a company while they still teach- is that wrong? Why not work with companies! I do mean "work with" a company, not "work for" a company. I see this interaction in the role of advocating for something I use in my [class]room.

When I am at a conference telling people about [a] company's product, it is not only a company I know, but often it is also a person within the company that I have formed both a professional and a personal relationship with. If you start to examine the role of teachers and begin to establish relationships with the education companies we are exposed to and often have to evaluate, then it was worth the time to post this column.

School Island by Castle Software - There is another company with a similar name, but not at all similar in product (not of similar quality either- in my opinion). This is the best "bang for the Internet buck" I have seen out there. I met [Prof Bill] Bill Ingui, President of Castle Software at a conference and followed up [with him] on a free four week trial offer. I called the 800 number and asked for more time. They gave me more time to evaluate this product. After my principal purchased a semester for a few students, we have grown to our whole school, and hopefully soon our district will use this Internet tool as well.

...I was doing one of my "Teacher's Bag of Tricks" workshops at another school district on a Saturday morning. We ran into a wall between the Internet program and the district firewall. So I called Prof. Bill on the cell to get some help. He got back to me within 30 minutes with ideas and help. Help on a Saturday before 10AM! That's special."

School Island continues to be an integral part of every classroom as a direct result of contributions made by our users. If you have suggestions, please write to Prof. Bill at billi@schoolisland.com and share your ideas with us so that all School Island family members benefit.
